RON Closing
Remote Online Closings, Powered by DocuSign
You don't have to sit at a closing table to close on your home. Select Title Company offers remote online notarization (RON) closings through our partnership with DocuSign — here's exactly what one looks like and what to expect.
What Is a RON Closing?
The Same Careful Closing — From Anywhere
A remote online notarization (RON) closing lets you complete your real estate closing over a secure live video call instead of coming to our office. Your documents are signed electronically, and a commissioned online notary verifies your identity and notarizes the documents during the video session — all of which is legal and fully recognized in Michigan.
Nothing about the substance changes. We still perform the title search, resolve any title issues, prepare the settlement documents, handle the funds, and record the deed with the county. What changes is the room: instead of traveling to Brighton, Ann Arbor or Fenton, you join from your home, your office, or anywhere else.
Remote closings are especially convenient for signers who are out of state or overseas, busy homeowners, and anyone who would rather not take a half day off work. Buyers and sellers can even join from different places — everyone signs their own documents in their own session.
Our Partner
Powered by DocuSign
Select Title Company partners with DocuSign — the world's leading e-signature and remote online notarization platform — to power our RON closings. Your entire session runs on DocuSign's secure, encrypted platform.
DocuSign ID Verification
Before you join the session, DocuSign's identity verification checks your government-issued photo ID and confirms you are who you say you are — the same rigor as an in-person closing.
DocuSign Notary
Your live video session takes place on DocuSign Notary with a Select Title Company closer who watches you sign, answers questions, and applies the digital notarial seal.
A Tamper-Sealed Record
Every completed document carries a digital certificate and the session is audio-video recorded, creating a complete, tamper-evident record of your signing.
If you've ever e-signed anything through DocuSign, you already know how smooth it is — a RON closing adds the notary to that same experience.
Remote Closing Service Fee
Remote online closing is an additional service, offered for $175 on top of our regular title fees and closing costs. The fee is disclosed on your settlement statement — no surprises on closing day.
What To Expect
How Your Remote Closing Works
From scheduling to recording, here's the flow of a remote online closing with Select Title Company:
Schedule Your Closing
When your file is ready, we set a date and time that works for you and confirm which documents can be signed remotely — some lenders allow a fully electronic closing, while others ask for certain loan documents on paper. We'll tell you exactly what to expect for your transaction.
Get Your DocuSign Link
You'll receive an email from DocuSign with a secure link to your closing session 10-15 minutes before your closing. Before the appointment, make sure your device, camera, microphone and internet are working — it takes about two minutes and saves time on closing day.
Verify Your Identity
Through DocuSign's identity verification, you'll upload or present your government-issued photo ID and answer a few quick multiple-choice security questions drawn from your personal history. This confirms your identity before the Select Title Company closer ever joins.
Meet Your Online Notary
You join the lobby with a Select Title Company closer and once all parties are online the closer will start the session and recording of audio and video will begin. Your documents appear on screen one at a time — the notary reviews each signature point with you, answers your questions, and watches as you sign electronically. The session is recorded end to end.
Sealed, Funded and Recorded
The Select Title Company closer applies the digital notarial seal to the notarized documents. Funds are disbursed, your deed is recorded with the county, and the closer will ask you how you would like to receive your closing package. Keys and possession follow just like any other closing.
What You'll Need
A remote closing is light on requirements. Have these ready and you're set:
A computer, tablet or smartphone
With a working camera and microphone — a laptop or desktop is the most comfortable for reading documents.
Government-issued photo ID
A driver's license, state ID or passport, used during DocuSign's identity verification.
A stable internet connection
Enough bandwidth for a video call — most home or office connections are more than enough.
A quiet, private place
Somewhere you can talk and focus for about an hour, free from background noise and interruptions.
No downloads, special software, or printing — the session runs in your web browser.
Common Questions About Remote Closings
Is a remote online closing legal in Michigan?
Yes. Michigan law recognizes remote online notarization, and our online notary is commissioned to perform notarizations over live video. Documents notarized this way are fully valid for real estate transactions.
Can I close remotely if I'm out of state or overseas?
Usually, yes — that's one of the biggest advantages of RON. As long as you can complete identity verification and join the video session, your physical location generally doesn't matter. Let us know where you'll be signing from when we schedule.
Will every document in my closing be electronic?
It depends on your lender. Some allow a fully electronic closing; others require certain loan documents to be signed on paper. We'll confirm exactly which parts of your transaction can be remote when we schedule your closing.
Do I need to create a DocuSign account?
No. You simply click the secure link we send you and follow the prompts in your web browser — no account, downloads, or plugins required.
How is my identity verified without meeting in person?
Through DocuSign's ID verification: your photo ID is checked, and you answer a few security questions only you would know. The notarized session is also audio-video recorded, creating a permanent record of who signed.
What if my technology fails during the session?
It's no problem — we simply reconnect or reschedule, and nothing is finalized until every document is complete. We also run a quick tech check with you beforehand to catch issues early.
What does a remote closing cost?
The remote closing service itself is $175, in addition to our regular title fees and closing costs. It's itemized on your settlement statement like any other closing charge.
Ready To Close From Anywhere?
Tell us you'd like a remote closing when you place your order, and our team will confirm what your lender allows and get your DocuSign session scheduled.
